Valve is using its Source engine – a powerful 3D game engine used in many top level games such as Half-Life, Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress series. But those are all first-person shooters, which have almost no similarities with DotA.

But in 2010 a top-down shoot-em-up game was published. It is set at a 60-degree angle and is called Alien Swarm. Alien Swarm is the closest example with DotA’s gameplay and graphics, developed by Valve and driven by Source engine.

Minimum requirements for Alien Swarm are:

    • OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
    • Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
    • Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
    • Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with 128 MB, Shader model 2.0. ATI X800, NVidia 6600 or better
    • Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
    • Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Recommended requirements:

  • OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
  • Processor: Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz
  • Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
  • Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with Shader model 3.0. NVidia 7600, ATI X1600 or better
  • Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
  • Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

It is very possible that requirements for DotA 2 will be similar. Maybe it is time for me to buy some new hardware. :)
